Why should you choose a Chartered Surveyor

When it comes to choosing a surveyor it always pays to choose a Chartered Surveyor. A Chartered Surveyor will have all the relevant qualifications and experience as well as often being regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

To become a member of RICS you have to adhere to the strict codes of practice and comply with the professional and ethical standards of the organisation. These are to:

Provide a high standard of service

Act with integrity at all times

Treat others with respect

Promote trust in the profession; and

Take responsibility for your actions

These standards are the cornerstone of RICS and they define the core values of how Marwood Surveyors operate. All members of RICS have to adhere to a  Complaints Handling Procedure (CHP), which is available to every client should they feel the need to make a complaint. This demonstrates the openness and transparency of RICS and its members plus it provides peace of mind to customers.

In addition, any report that a Chartered Surveyor produces is backed up by Professional Indemnity Insurance which is valid up to six years after the date of the work; another reason to choose a Chartered Surveyor. Personal Indemnity Insurance protects the consumer should an error have occurred during the surveyor valuation.

Surveyors are not regulated

A Surveyor who is not chartered doesn’t have the same safeguards. Similar to Estate Agents, a Surveyor who is not chartered, is also not regulated by any professional body. This effectively means that anyone can call themselves a Surveyor and they don’t have to possess all the necessary qualifications and experience required.

As a customer, you do not have a body that you can go to in order to complain so if something does go wrong, you may find you have to go through a private litigation with the individual or company involved. It’s unlikely that any Complaints Handling Procedure or Professional Indemnity Insurance will be in place so you are in the lap of the gods when it comes to getting a satisfactory resolution.
